Finding the Perfect Dress for YOU!

~written by Cendi Micor

You are engaged...you have your date picked...your vision is vivid in your mind...all eyes will be on you and your partner...but, let's face it- the dress is a vital part of that first glance at you, the bride.

So, here are some things to keep in mind to make your dress shopping easier.

Your dress should express the theme or style of your entire wedding vision. For example, if you are having a winter wedding, don't look at summer dresses. Even if you don't have a theme, you should still maintain a consistent flow throughout.

Do some research in terms of what shade of white suits your complexion. From stark white, to ivory, to champagne, there are shades that just will not look good for your complexion. Know this so your heart is not set, only to be disappointed when you leave the fitting room. With that being said, are you even going to wear white? It is becoming so trendy now to add colour into bridal gowns.

Length is another huge factor. Do you want a full length with a cathedral train? There is nothing wrong with a shorter dress. Mid-calf? Or even one that is longer in the back than the front. Know what suits your style...your dress, your call!

As much as we all want a dress that is one of a kind, made only for us, budget obviously plays a huge role. Nothing is wrong with off the rack. Nothing is wrong with second-hand. Take advantage of deals and sales. Take advantage of fundraisers.

Trust the bridal gown consultants!!! This one is huge because as much as you may be set in your preferences, be open-minded to what they suggest. Majority of the women I've spoken to go with the opposite, or something very different from what they originally had in mind. Certain styles specific body shapes...there are many variations of bead work, lace, bows, etc. They KNOW what they're doing, it's their JOB for a reason!

Remember that ultimately, the dress is YOUR choice. Be careful how many people you bring with you. Yes, it is fun but keep in mind, more people, more opinions and you can't please everyone. One tip...go shopping alone first. Get a feel of what works, then bring people along. Some people are not superstitious about having their partner see the dress but personally, I believe that the first time your partner sees it is when you walk down the aisle. There is nothing better than that element of surprise.

The more dresses you see, the more they all begin to look the same. TAKE A BREAK!! Like anything, too much of anything is overwhelming, so if necessary, stop shopping for a bit.

This final tip should be a "no-brainer" but I'm going to say it anyhow....give yourself enough time. Something unexpected will occur in your wedding so realize that it could be something to do with your dress. If you plan ahead, it will work out. Especially if you are having the dress custom-made. Go at least 8-12months before your wedding date.

Your dress is meant for you and you will JUST KNOW when you find it. Just remember to have FUN with the process....happy shopping!!
